“I Bet You Didn’t Know This…”
Hello Everyone:
Recently I learned some pretty astounding things about Google PPC. Things contained in the Terms of Service (that NOBODY actually reads) which could mean the difference between your Google PPC ads running smoothly or having them SHUT DOWN…maybe permanently!!
Things You Should Know About Google Adwords
In order to drive Google PPC traffic from Google Adwords ads to a capture page, here are some Google Adwords Guidelines you MUST know:
1. Videos Must Be Able To Be Turned Off. All videos must have a mechanism to allow the viewer to turn video off. In other words, Google will not allow your ads to show if you are placing ads that go to capture pages and subsequent pages as well, that contain videos that you can’t shut off!! As a result, make sure all your videos can be turned off. (I TOLD you those “no shut off videos” would lead to trouble!!
2. No Pop Ups. No pop ups are allowed when leaving a page. You know, those annoying pop ups that come up when you attempt to leave a page are the ones Google will not allow on pages linked to from PPC ads. So if you’re running Adwords ads, take off all pop ups. As far as I’ve been able to tell, right now, autoplay videos are allowed. However, recent split tests I’ve heard about state that non autoplay videos outperform autoplay. Of course, conduct your own split tests to determine this for yourself.
3. No Affiliate Links. Of course, no affiliate links are allowed in the destination url of the Adwords Ad. In other words, the domain of the destination url of the Adwords ad must be the same as the domain of the capture page linked to the Adwords ad. If they are not, the ads will not be shown
4. Congruence is king in Adwords. That is, content of the Adwords ad must match the content of the capture page linked to that ad. Even more to the point, the closer the Adwords headline matches the headline of the capture page, the higher your quality score. If these the ad and the capture page DON’T match you risk a low quality score, your ads not showing or worse…your account being permanently shut down.
5. You cannot have multiple adwords accounts. (I BET many of you did not know this!!). If you do, Google can shut you down permanently.
6. Importance of Quality Score. If your quality scores are consistently low (primarily from lack of congruence between your Adwords ad and your capture page) you could find yourself paying extremely high prices for your keywords. Here is a real example someone recently told me. One day this person was paying $1.25 a click for a certain keyword, due to low quality scores, he woke up the next day to find he was paying over $10.00 for the same keyword!!
7. No Replicated Sites. Adwords ads linked to web pages with duplicated content (any sort of replicated page) will not be shown. Therefore, it appears you can’t use web pages created by any of the major systems (7 Figure System, MLM Lead System Pro etc) on Adwords. It does appear that when you otherwise adhere to the rules listed here and you create your own page (Dreamweaver, BlueVoda, WordPress etc) you’re fine…for now!
Should We Give Up On Google Adwords?
Not unless you want to give up on 70-80% of all search traffic!!! All these scary rules notwithstanding, you just need to adhere to the basic rules above, not try to “game” the system (as one major “big name” producer in the industry tried…and FAILED to do) and at all times, make sure your Adwords Ads are congruent with your capture pages.
Of course you should be advertising on Yahoo and MSN PPC platforms as well as on Paid Media networks (PPV)where many of these issues do not exist.
Advertising is a science AND art..even moreso on Google’s Adwords platform. Just keep checkin in with this blog for the latest updates and do what you KNOW you’re supposed to do.
I’m generating PLENTY of leads on Adwords…you should be too.
As Always

Kevin – Great post!!! You are the first INDUSTRY LEADER who I have seen analyze possible legitimate causes of the “Google Slap” rather than suggesting irrational corporate behavior. We would ALL do better to FOLLOW YOUR EXAMPLE. Very Helpful. Cheers!!!
